Several UpStream users are using our comments feature and wondered if they could reply by email to comments about projects.
We integrated UpStream with the default WordPress comments system. This default system has many advantages but unfortunately reply-by-email is not one of them.
Yes, this is possible for WordPress.com users and has been since 2009. However, it’s not yet possible for WordPress.org users. This reply-by-email feature is also available on some other comment platforms such as IntenseDebate.

Replyable is a WordPress Plugin Solution
Replyable is a WordPress plugin that replaces the default WordPress comments. The basic, free version of Replyable offers the ability to design and customize your comment emails.
If you want the reply-by-email feature, you’ll need to upgrade to the $2.99 per month subscription. It also provides the ability for authors to use email to moderate comments on their post, as in the image below:
Support for Plugins
Sadly, Replyable doesn’t work with 3rd party plugins such UpStream. Each plugin needs it’s own solution.
For example, this plugin is around $100 per year and enables reply-by-email for BuddyPress.
This plugin enables reply-by-email for bbPress, but hasn’t been updated in over two years.
Hopefully reply-to-email is a feature that we can add to UpStream soon, but it’s not yet available for our users – or most WordPress users.
